One topic of discussion in business ethics involves the issue of pincer labor, which is crucial as business organizations seek to achieve a global perspective in conducting business. In effect, it is important to understand the issue of claw labor, as an important topic in business ethics, and highlight approaches that business organizations take in order to deal with this issue. To begin with, it is crucial to understand the concept of child labor. in that location are varying international principles provided by labor organizations, such as ILO, which provide different definitions of in bearable and tolerable forms and definitions of child labor. For tolerable work, the ILO practice no(prenominal) 138 (1973 ) identifies work that does not make children fail to attend school with the work being light and vilifyless to the growth and maturement of the child as tolerable work (ILO, n.d.). Consequently, the convention stipulates the right age for this work being 13 years although the age can go down to 12 years depending on various circumstances such as the economic situation of the child and their family, which is crucial since such work can be crucial for the growth and the development of the child in question (UNICEF, 1997). On the other hand, intolerable work is abusive and dangerous with the work being exploitive on children. In this case, the ILO Convention No. 182 (1999) identifies child labor as any form of slavery or practices that are similar to slavery with actions related to the sale of children, debt bondage use children, serfdom, and the involvement of children in armed conflicts (ILO, n.d.). Importantly, this definition covers the use of children in issues related to chil d prostitution, using children in illegal activities, and in other areas that might harm the growth and development of children in regard to their moral values, health, and their safety. At this juncture, it is crucial to point out this convention, and other international codes and standards such as the UN convention on the rights of children, define a child as any individual below the age of 18 years (UNICEF, 1997). Nonetheless, it is important to point out that perceptions about child labor may vary depending on the culture although business organizations should use the definitions provided by ILO and other international organizations such as the UN. According to data from the global Labor Organization, one in every seven children is in some form of child labor. This puts the figure at 218 million children involved in child labor, which is a decrease from the 240 million children involved in labor in 2002 (ILO, 2006). Nonetheless, it is crucial to point out that this is not ethic al practice in business since children are supposed to enjoy their childhood and not working under harmful conditions. In line with this, these children work in various sectors of the global preservation with these sectors located in various parts of the world. However, a majority of these children work in the agricultural sector, which is a result of the non-regulation of this sector in terms of correct the human resource capital working in the sector (Kolk & Tulder, 2002). Case Problem - Essay ExampleSuch a business racing shell demonstrates yet again how statistics can be used to reduce uncertainty. In particular, simulation modeling enables quantification of events and outcomes with varying probabilities. Previewing all possible outcomes with unknown probabilities of occurrence helps to measure potential costs and benefits. Monte Carlo simulation is one such procedure that applies (Doane & Seward, 2007 Stout, 2007).These parameters require the use of a uniform model, where RV values vary at heart a given range with no central tendency or standard deviation assumed. For the first step of estimating randomly varying demand, the result of 52 iterations of revenue simulations (see Table 1 below) yields a somewhat skewed distribution with a mean of $540 daily, a median of $542 and a standard deviation of $184. porcine annual revenue before simulating the effect of mechanical breakdown would be $28,109. This is the baseline.Next, we factor in the incid ence of breakdowns and the lead time for repair. We employ the RAND function to foreshadow the probability that the copier will be trouble-free all days of the week (instead of defining as 6 times the square root of r). For the first week in the all-year iterations, therefore, the RAND value of 0.487 translates to a probability that the important copier will break down after just three days of operation. That same week, repair lead time is calculated using the VLOOKUP function based on the same column of RAND values. Since RAND=0.487 is lower than the 0.65 cumulative probability associated with dickens days repair lead time, the VLOOKUP function returns 1 day. Hence, revenue loss for the week comes to gross revenue times the proportion of 7 days that the main copier can reliably be predicted to

Foreclosure and the Aspect of Morality Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Foreclosure and the Aspect of Morality - Essay ExampleThis paper expounds on the lessonity reflexion of foreclosure stating that that freewill foreclosure is justified while involuntary foreclosure is unjustified. Reasons Both borrowers and lenders are trying to make money. The lender will seek to gain financi completelyy from selling the spot and no one complains of its immorality. The morality of business allows the borrower to soilably attain utmost advantage from their property as possible (Hagerty, 2009). What happens when the property loses its value? What moral inducing allows one to proceed chasing a valueless acquisition? There is none whatsoever. In a bid to make as much money, each seeks to begin the alternative that suits them best. If the property loses value, the borrower whitethorn tend to voluntary foreclose the property and this is morally justified. Too many foreclosures in one area form a bad place to live, even for those who are paying their bills (house pa yments). The main reasons for foreclosure guard mainly been related to displacement, crime issues and shattered credit scores (Rhodes, 2008). Is it moral to support for an individual who has been displaced from a certain region to continue paying out for a property to which they have lost ownership? Absolutely non The moral aspect is to let the family or individual to rebuild their lives while sympathizing with their predicament (Weitekamp, 2011). Crime is a social ill that few can tolerate. If a resemblance becomes infested with criminal activities, is it moral to risk ones life in such a neighborhood? The answer again is logical NO. In a severe inlet approximately people might be trying to pay their bills but still cant because they lost their jobs. Thus, further economic hardships that have hit many people have made even renting a premise more costly than it was 3 years back. The whole recession situation has made it more difficult for people to get jobs, further straining their incomes and lifestyles (Lowenstein, 2010). Thus, as morally upright individual, the borrower forecloses the deal to avoid pressurizing them further. Explanation It is believed that voluntary defaults or strategic defaults have become an increasing affair in America nowadays. Long gone are the days when people would do all they could to pay their mortgage and satisfy their legal and financial obligations. The concomitant that many believe that business and the world in general is amoral does not justify the reason for people to abscond their duties and obligations (Walker, 2003). Despite the house prices falling and the owners left with houses that cost less than their true value, the lender left owing should fulfill their end of the bargain. However, some have resulted in a calculated decision where they choose to hang on to their money while letting their houses go. The reason this is not immoral is the fact that the voluntary bit comes after weighing ones options and the be nefits of the property to be acquired. It would be moral if empathy were a part of human reasoning. Situations that one may not be able to handle should not be taken as an immoral way of making another to lose their livelihood. If one is not able to pay their mortgage and voluntarily requests foreclosure to be pursued, it would be moral to let them take the credit

The abuse at abu ghraib happened because of basic socio-biological Essay
The abuse at abu ghraib happened because of basic socio-biological drives because humans are naturally prone to treat people who are non considered of their suffer - Essay ExampleIn the United States who is the self-proclaimed protector of human rights and a country which has a multicultural society, discrimination is still a huge occupation within this society. In this country hate crimes are an epidemic and a real solution towards preventing them are currently not viable since the society is not ready to transform itself and truly accept people who are different from the status quo. In 2004 an unfortunate event occurred at Abu Ghraib in which Iraqi prisoners were mistreat by American soldiers and civilian subcontractors. This paper describes this event and proposes that the reason the abuses at Abu Ghraib occurred is because of the basic social-biological drives of humans which makes them naturally prone to treat people who are not considered of their kind inhumanely. On April 20 04 the entire globe learned about serious violation of human rights and abuse that American soldiers committed against Iraqi prisoners stationed in a correctional facility in Iraq called Abu Ghraib. The acts committed by the Americans were truly inhumane and included things such as rape, physical abuse, taking naked pictures of prisoners in super revealing positions, urinating on them, and sodomization with batons among other despicable abuses. The story was revealed by the media when insiders in the prison revealed the photographic evidence of the horrific things happening at Abu Ghraib. The person claimed that the phalanx was ready to cover up the event and was going to secretly deal with the matter. The scandal created hysteria throughout America especially within governmental officials. US government officials acknowledge that the event at this prison violated the Geneva Convention which prohibits torture and cruel treatment of war prisoners. The army reported that 27 people a re accused of being associated with abuses at Abu Ghraid, including 23 soldiers from a military intelligence

Persecution of Muslims in Burma Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Persecution of Moslems in Burma - Essay ExampleShe remained under house arrest for almost 21 years. However, she was released in 2010 and everybody shifted their focus from Burmese government activity to other matters. Burma again caught the attention of humanists all over the world recently because of the ongoing ethnic violence against the minority Muslims by the government and the Buddhists. Majority of the battalion in Burma are Buddhists even though Muslims constitute a substantial portion of Burmese race. The Muslim minority in Myanmar mostly consists of the Rohingya people and the descendants of Muslim immigrants from India and China, as well as descendants of earlier Arab settlers (Persecution of Muslims in Burma, 2012). It should be noted that financial abilities of majority of the Muslims in Burma are better than the majority Buddhists. This is because of their prominence in business and trades. Buddhists are not at all interested in watching the minority Muslims gaini ng progress in Burmese authorities and business. As a result of that they started violence against Rohingya people to expel them from Burmese territories. Credible reports available online suggest that It began on 3rd June 2012 when 11 Muslims were killed by the Burmese Army and the Buddhist mobs after bringing them down from a bus (Hyderi, 2012). Since then hundreds of Muslims forced to sacrifice their lives in front of the fury generated by the Buddhists. matchless of the most surprising situation about this violence is the stand taken by the humanist and Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Even though soggy observers all over the world expected Aung to condemn this incidents, to their utmost surprise, she justified these massacres. Myanmar Noble Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi says she will not back the minority of Rohingya Muslims that gather in been persecuted and killed by the majority Buddhists (Myanmars Suu Kyi says she can not back Rohingya Muslims, 2012). This paper analyses the details of the prosecutions of Muslims in Burma. Why prosecutions of Muslims in Burma are happening? The Myanmar government and its majority population refuse to recognize Rohingya Muslims as citizens and label the minority of about 800,000 as illegal immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh, an impoverished state that has shown no willingness to help the Rohingyas (Myanmars Suu Kyi says she cannot back Rohingya Muslims, 2012). It is a fact that there are plenty of Muslim states in the proximity of Burma. Pakistan and Bangladesh are Muslim dominated countries whereas Indias northern state Kashmir is also a Muslim dominated state. People from these Muslim states are crossing the borders of Burma and settling in Burma. This process started in the past and continued until recent times. As in the occurrence of other countries, the internal resources are getting reduced in Burma also because of the over exploitation and population growth. Burmese people or the Buddhis ts do conceptualize that the illegal immigrants or the Muslims are looting their resources. That is why they started violence against the Muslims recently. They argue that Burma is for Burmese people or for Buddhists not for illegal immigrants or Muslims. Majority of the Burmese people and the administration believe that all the Muslim population in Burma are illegal immigrant

Stem Cell Research Essay Example for Free
Stem Cell Research EssayIntroductionA realise at the progressive societies today indicates that science is encumbered by moral and political considerations. The world of science is yet to be democratized and viable ideas ar creation sent to the gallows to satiate conservative thinkers at the helm of leadership. A glimpse at most of the profitable vaccines that direct evolved indicates a struggle between pietism and modern intelligence. Science is struggling to permeate an almost non impervious wall of ethical consideration before a certain well meaning encounter puke be allowed into the mainstream. Since the inquiry into stem jail mobile phones was pioneered in the 1960s, it has elicited hue and cry from the public with some claiming that scientists are trying to play God. Many still have remained marveled at the exploits of modern science and have identified the wide range of benefits that arise from this enquiry. Stem cell research is indeed revolutionizing the dis course of heterogeneous man impairments and diseases such as leukemia and Parkinsons disease amongst a wide range of other benefits. The fascination created by stem cells research is immense and has expand the scope of scientific study. It continues to elicit interest regarding how organisms are able to grow from just one undivided cell and also the efficacy of such single cells to multiply and replace the damaged ones. Immense research is existence carried out focusing on the application of cell therapy in the treatment of a hail of diseases.Definition Stem cell refers to a generic cell that can make exact copies of itself indefinitely. (Chad). Gerald (203) definition of stem cells is centered on the inherent characteristics that they have which make them outstanding in comparison to other cells. He observes that they are undifferentiated cells that renew themselves at the single cell level for many cell doublings. (203). There are two types of stem cells the embryonic stem cell and the adult stem cells.Types of Stem CellsEmbryonic stem cells are derived from a foetus (blastocyst) before the cell initiates the process of differentiation. They posses a elevateder ability of differentiation compared to the adult stem cells. Much of the controversy that has arisen centers on the embryonic stem cells out-of-pocket to their origin.Adult stem cells on the other hand are obtained from the bone marrow. Their versatility in research is restricted by the fact that they posses a number of limitations in terms of differentiation and divisibility. The research into adult cells commenced earlier than for the embryonic cells and although both bear a number of similarities, adult cells are less flexible and untold research and furor has been focused on the embryonic stem cells.Properties of Stem CellsAll in all, stem cells serve an important purpose of replenishing damaged cells in the body. They repair the body system due to their higher voltage of dividing into many cells limitlessly and also their ability to adapt to the prevailing chemical environment. As Pam et al (8) observes that, when a stem cell divides, each daughter can remain a stem cell or adopt a more specialized affair such as muscle, blood or brain cell, depending on the absence or presence of chemical signals. Indeed, stem cells have the ability to grow and transmute into a particular cell that possesses characteristics that are similar to the cells of the deformed tissues. It is this self renewal capability and their higher potency that continue to arouse much oddity amongst scientists who see them as the answer to various health and medical problems facing mankind. Self renewal characteristic of a stem cell simply refers to its ability to divide and form multiply cells without losing its initial original characteristics. Potency of a stem cell revolves around the ability to differentiate into desired specialized cells. Depending on the capacity of cells to divide, the y are referred to either pluripotency or unipotency.Pluripotent cells have the ability to differentiate into a vast studyity. (Bellomo 35) Such cellular quality has be deduct a major source of scientific inquiry as piluripitent cells have demonstrated unmatched ability of transform themselves into any set of tissues. They can develop either into endodermis, mesoblast or ectoderms as has been outlined by research. Endodermis refers to the inner tissues that range from the lining of the lungs and also the other internal organs such as the guts. Mesoderm is the shopping centre layer of body tissues that range from blood and the marrow alongside others. On the other hand ectoderm refers to the outer most layers.Medical Benefits of Stem CellsThe potent characteristic of a stem cell endows it with the ability to produce other cells although limited in number. An example of the multipitent cell is the hematopoietic cells. Such cells too can give rise to other blood cells but their natu re of differentiation limits their ability to form liver cells, kidney cells, nerve cells, or any other kind-hearted of cell except for a select few kinds of blood cells. (Bellomo 37). Research into the multipotent cells was intensified in the recent past upon the discovery that they possess the potential to be used in stem cell therapies hence easing the suffering of millions in the world.Further research into this willing uncover even progress limitless application. Such research will enable scientists to fathom the complex process that the undifferentiated cells have to undergo before becoming differentiated. This mostly is because legal age of ailments experienced in the body are as a result of the abnormal processes of cell differentiation. Scientists are yet to understand the signals that turn specific genes on and off to influence the differentiation of the stem cell (The National Institute of Health Resource of Stem Cell Research). A further grasp of such a process will no doubt provide knowledge of what causes diseases as well as the various strategies to treat such diseases.Hopes are high hence in the medical profession that advances in modern technologies will be able to find a lasting cure to diseases such as cancer and diabetes. This is because there still exists a huge gap in the current knowledge of stem cell research as some of the processes are still shrouded by mystery. The existing treatments, after a breakthrough of research in the past 30 years, have centered on offering treatment to cancer patient that have complications such as leukemia. Chemotherapy has been used in the destruction of the malignant tissues. This however has proved to be detrimental to other useful cells such as the haematopoietic cells. Advances make in the stem cell research have will be able to address this problem. This is because stem cells will be reintroduced into the system in a bid to replace the destroyed cells during chemotherapy. Further research will be c entered on the treatment of cancerous tumors. A look at brain cancer history and trends over time indicates it is one of the most difficult to treat due to the speedy circularise of the malignant tissues. Research that has been conducted in dogs indicate that drugs can be developed that will specifically target the cancerous stem cells. Stem cell research has also been found to possess a potential of curing spinal cord injuries. In a study conducted in Korea, scientists have been able to come up with stem cells tailored to match an individual (BBC News channel). Further information on the research indicates that this will result to diseases such as diabetes being treated without a patients body rejecting tissues. This is a major discovery that has solved one of the major headaches facing the treatment of diabetes. In accessory to diabetes, heart damages and baldness too will be contained in future. This indicates that in the end a wide range of medical maladies facing benignantity will be eradicated through stem cell research.Stem Cell Research Controversy In the face of all the above mentioned benefits, stem cells research has been largely hampered by the opposition that has raged on centering on the use of embryonic stem cells. As afore mentioned, embryonic stem cells have been found to possess unique characteristics that give them a high ability to multiply and differentiate. Research has indicated that they can self divide and be able to maintain their inherent characteristics. This has made them more viable in the stem based therapy than the adult stem cells. They are seen as providing the answers to various diseases facing mankind. This has attracted criticism from pro life activists. The Catholic Church for example has been very vocal in its opposition of the research citing a number of moral grounds. The major argument has been that embryonic research devalues human worth. Critics insist that the embryonic human should have the same moral status as th e fetus or the child or the adult (The ebrary ebrary, 210).They criticize the ideal that embryos are not yet human insisting that focus hence should be on adult stem cells which may posses the same differentiation and year abilities rather than on embryonic research. This opposition insists that the proper test of earth should be if the embryo has the potential to organize itself into a living human consentient and not on whether it is yet living (Inc ebrary ebrary 210)Conclusion These arguments made against the stem cell research may hold some water when addressed on the context of morals. Indeed it is important to accord embryos the respect they deserve in the recognition that it is a stage in human growth. However, such arguments fail to agnise the immense benefits that such a research accords to humanity. It hence defeats logic for critics of stem cell research to equate human embryos with human beings. Though a human embryo is important in itself it is not always that it de velops into a human being and if there is a way that it can be beneficial to humanity such benefit should be explored. It is hence important that the public in the understanding of the mentioned benefits urge the political regimes to allocate more funding to the stem cell research to uncover their full potential.Works Cited.Chad H.
